All files on your hard disk are backed up. Files not on your hard disk are not backed up. If you have a local directory (file cache) for google drive that is in sync with the network drive. then it is backed up by time machine. same with dropbox; same with icloud. Any files you have on the local drive are also in the TM backup. although it may not be directly accessible if the files is hidden in a holder on the local harddrive as is normally the case with dropbox (for example) it will be hidden in exactly the same way in the Time Machine backup. Files in the cloud that are NOT on your hard disk are not backed up by TM.
Time Machine is either off or on. There is no ability to adjust the schedule. It will read and back up your local Dropbox folder, assuming that local folder is on a drive Time Machine is monitoring. Dropbox Settings Preferences Account Dropbox location. With Transmit you can manually backup files - including your Time Machine folder - to the cloud using its Synchronize feature. To do this, open your Time Machine folder on the left pane and a remote folder on a cloud service or FTP server on the right pane. Click the Synchronize button on the toolbar to start the process. Dropbox's rollback functionality makes it a fantastic user friendly, realtime, always online and offsite backup solution as i found recently after a malware hack that encrypted all our files and backups. Dropbox was the only backup resilient enough to survive and it was easy to restore everything. Time Machine won’t just backup your Mac, it will keep hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for each month, so you can recover an earlier.
Accessing your files inside a TM backup is a very poor way to access files. In fact let me tell you now. don't do it that way. copy the files to a USB drive plugged into your computer. Or to a USB drive plugged into your TC as a poor second. it is slow.
Then you can include that USB drive in the TM backups although that is hardly necessary. You cannot simply copy files from a TM backup you need to recover them. it can be slow and painful process at times.
Please read Pondini as to what is included in TM backups and what is excluded
The first few questions in particular cover what is included. Q8 and Q9 are particularly relevant.
There are proper trackers which can keep track of the files backed up if you are concerned.
It is highly recommend you do NOT include local file caches in the TM backup. due to the fact that any size change in the local cache will force the entire cache to be backed up. so to be ridiculous. lets say you have a 100GB dropbox local cache. you add a 1KB file to it. TM will then be forced to backup 100GB. next day you modified the 1KB file. TM will backup the 100GB file again. do it for 10days and there is 1TB from your Time Machine target disk gone. to backup 10KB.

How to: Time Machine backup for PC with Windows 10, 8 or 7
In this article, we'll see how to easily set up an automatic, complete backup of your entire computer - similar to Apple's Time Machine. This kind of backup that covers all of your files, automatically and silently updates itself all the time, and does not slow your computer down.
The software we will be using is available here (with a 30-day free trial): Zinstall FullBack.
The 'gold standard' of user-friendly, non-intrusive backup systems is Apple's Time Machine. It's a 'run-and-done' product: once started, you don't need to do anything else and are protected immediately and forever. Unfortunately, that is only available for Apple computers.
Sky Go Extra: Sky TV customers only. No extra cost with Multiscreen, otherwise £5 extra a month. Allow up to 24 hours for your account to be activated. 31 days' notice to cancel. Concurrent online viewing on 2 devices. Download selected Sky Go content in the UK only via Wi-Fi. Content depends on your Sky TV. What you need for the Sky Go app to work with Sky Q What you get with Sky Go Extra You’ll need Sky Go Extra to download shows and movies to compatible laptops, mobiles and tablets (you can register up to 6 devices and when you register a 7th it will auto-swap with your least used device).
Luckily, we have found a way to get the Time Machine experience on your Windows PC (Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7). In fact, there are two ways to do it, as seen below.
Traditional PC backup solutions are powerful, but pretty difficult to use for a non-technical person. They require extensive setup and configuration, they ask you to point them where your important stuff is, and worst of all - they slow down your computer quite heavily.
Here is what you want to get in terms of your backup solution:
- Complete: Your backup must, well, backup your stuff. This means that if you accidentally delete a file, or if your computer stops working, you must have a way to restore everything.
- Fast: It must not slow down your computer. Too many backup products keep your files safe, but make the computer slow down to a crawl and become unusable.
- Easy: If you can't easily make the backup work, it's not worth much. Your backup must start with a click, and do its job without requiring your attention
- Restorable: The point of having a backup is to be able to restore your stuff when disaster strikes. This process must be easy, otherwise the backup is again worthless.
Let's examine the two easiest ways to handle your backup:
Windows File History: Built into Windows already, and will help if you lose a file. However, can't protect you from real disasters when your computer breaks.
Zinstall FullBack: Answers all the requirements above: complete, fast, easy, restorable. Basically just run it, and never look at it again. When disaster strikes, it will restore all of your stuff, including your programs, settings and profiles - not just files!
How to use Windows File History
Time Machine Website
Windows has a built-in system called File History. It stores multiple old versions of your files, so that if you accidentally erase a file, or delete it, you can restore the original version as if nothing happened.
Here is how to enable it:
- Connect an external USB drive to your computer
- Click the Start Button to open your Start Menu, and type in the words:
file history - Click on the 'File History' option that shows up
- In the menu that opens, click 'Turn On'
- You can select a different drive using the 'Select drive' option
That's it - you now have File History enabled.
To restore a file you've deleted, simply locate the folder it was in, right click on it and select 'History'. This will show you the past states of this folders - and your file will be there!
As you can see, the File History approach is relatively easy to set up, and it's free with your Windows. Its disadvantage is that it does not protect you from a computer crash and does not allow you to restore your files to another computer. So while it's better than nothing, it's still not enough. Let's move on to a better option.
How to use Zinstall FullBack - a Time Machine alternative for Windows
Zinstall FullBack is an even better approach. It is even easier to set up, it protects all your files and all your programs, it does not slow down your computer, and when your computer breaks (hopefully far in the future!), it will gracefully restore everything you have to a new computer that you get - and that's the single most important requirement in a backup.
Dropbox Time Machine Backup App
Here is how to set it up:
- Download Zinstall FullBack (you can get Zinstall FullBack here.)
- Run it on your computer
- That's it.
It will automatically look for the best place to keep your files safe. If you have a USB drive connected, it will use that. If you have Dropbox or Cloud backup solutions, it will use that. If you have other computers on the network, it will use them. You don't need to worry about a thing.
Zinstall FullBack will then automatically create hourly, weekly and monthly backups of every single file and program on your computer. It's extremely fast and efficient, so it takes very little extra space, and you won't feel any slow down.
The best thing about it is the restore. When your computer breaks, and you get a new one, all you need to do is run Zinstall's Rescue Kit on the new computer. It will restore not just files, but even programs (!) from your backup.
This means that in a short while, you will have the new computer set up exactly like the old one, with your Office, your programs, emails, accounts, passwords, documents, pictures and everything else.
It doesn't even need to be the same Windows version. Even if your old computer was Windows 7, and your new computer is Windows 10, Zinstall FullBack will be recovered to it, no questions asked.
